Revel in the Great Outdoors – Indiana Dunes National Park and more
The great outdoors is calling – head out to the nation’s newest national park! Indiana Dunes National Park and State Park just west of Michigan City feature the best of three worlds – lake, dunes, and forests. Hike trails among lofty dunes and inland through woodlands in this sprawling natural enclave. In the summer, you can take advantage of numerous ranger-led hikes and activities. On snowy winter days, many visitors experience the stunning white landscape on cross-country skis or snowshoes (Rentals available).
Miles of soft sand beaches hug Lake Michigan, from Washington Park in Michigan City west to the national park. The beaches draw swimmers and sunbathers in the summer. In winter, hardy outdoor lovers enjoy hiking the beach at the national park to see the magical shelf ice that forms as Lake Michigan’s waves freeze. (Warning: If you are hiking the beach, park officials warn to not walk on shelf ice. These shelves may look sturdy but can break under even a small amount of weight, and there is frigid water underneath. So stay well back from the shoreline.)
Stop at the Park Visitors Center first for brochures about the national and state parks and advice on the best trail systems. Stick around and enjoy the center’s orientation videos, displays, art exhibits, activity room, and book store.
