It’s Always Festival Season!
There was no tunnel, and the ballroom was designed as Catherine Barker’s playroom. These are just a couple of the surprising discoveries unearthed regarding the mansion. Join us for discussion of the updated history the Barker Mansion’s design and construction followed by a tour of the mansion in light of new evidence. Guests will be able to see and interact with architect Frederick Perkins’ original design for the mansion based upon newly found blueprints and sketches from 1905. Cost is $15 per adult, and $10 per senior or youth. Registration is required via Eventbrite or by calling the mansion at (219) 873-1520 x5.

Regional K-12 Chess Tournament hosted by Renaissance Academy. This is an individual event with students competing in ten separate divisions: Kindergarten & Under, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grades 9-12. (Exceptions: Pre-school chess players may enter in the K division. Other divisions, i.e. 7/8, may combine if there are fewer players.) Pre-Registration required. Fee $8/participant (received by 11/9/18). Late entries may be accepted if time and space permit. Late entry fee is $15. Join Friendship Botanic Gardens as we host a free celebration of Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month. Kids will have the chance to embark on a turkey count scavenger hunt throughout the gardens and nature trails – find every hidden paper turkey and win a special Thanksgiving prize!
Then, enjoy the Native American Heritage Garden and get a firsthand look at Indigenous Peoples’ cooking techniques as the garden educator demonstrates the cooking of traditional pumpkin stew over an open flame.
Baby its cold outside, and Santa is coming to downtown LaPorte! The Santa Parade is held in downtown LaPorte on November 24 at 12pm. The parade runs down Lincolnway and State St through downtown and ends at Santa’s Chalet in Plaza 618, 618 Lincolnway in Downtown LaPorte. After the parade, children can visit with newly-arrived Santa at his chalet.
The 18th Annual Christmas Candle-Light Tour hosted by People Engaged in Preservation (P.E.P.) will feature 5 historic homes, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and The Old LaPorte Library. Also, enjoy live musical entertainment, refreshments and horse-drawn carriage rides as par of the tour.
