About Robin Maxon, Watercolor Artist
“It seems the desire to paint is an innate quality of many artists that just find it necessary to create. If you’re lucky, you’ll have people in your life who encourage, nurture and facilitate this desire. Ultimately, watercolor is where I landed. My painting style has an illustrative component with an emphasis on realism. I enjoy the process of creating a composition, working from photographs and sometimes combining multiple photos into one piece.
These works reflect a wide range of subjects that I am attracted to. Inspiration comes from different places and different seasons. In the meantime, I continue to challenge myself with detailed subjects while trying to capture the play of light and the nuances of color in something common, natural or unexpected.
Some subjects lend themselves to the use of tinted watercolor paper. I’ve used tan, gray and even a rose colored paper. This creates a different set of challenges. In these, the white color is actually painted using an opaque gouache that is usually reserved for small highlights. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with watercolor on canvas, which is pretreated with a watercolor ground. The final piece is then hand rubbed with wax to seal and protect the watercolors.
My work is on display at the Chartreuse Art Gallery Co-op in downtown St. Joseph where I’ve been a member for 6 years and Mr. Miller’s Art Emporium in Douglas, Michigan.
My husband Rick and I have lived in southwest Michigan for 42 years, and have 3 sons: Tyler, Evan and Daniel. Each is pursuing his own interests in the arts, including music, fine art and theatre.”
