LaPorte, IN (May 10, 2017)

The 2017 Arts in the Park season will kick off June 7, leading into an exciting summer blast of music featuring some new, high-energy performers as well as favorites like the City Band, Dr. Groovy & the Soul Surgeons, and the Tom Milo Big Band.

For 17 years, the concert series has livened up Wednesday and Thursday evenings at scenic Fox Park’s Dennis Smith Amphitheater with genres including rock, pop, jazz, blues, country, big band and Christian. The experience is enhanced by the wraparound of exhibits by talented local artists and brief poetry presentations.

This year, some brand new bands have been added to the lineup, embracing additional musical styles.

On Thursday, June 22, Washington, D.C.-based Black Masala will bring its fun whirlwind of a show to the local stage, featuring “a healthy dose of funk, soul and eclectic grooves” backed by trombone, sax, trumpet and sousaphone.

On July 20, Pierce Avenue swings into the park, fronted by former local singing sensation Jamie (Beaver) Pierce and her husband, Tony. Now based in Nashville, Tenn., their country harmonies will thrill the audience.

Regional band Island 49 will roll in with a tropical vibe on July 27, while another area favorite, Nawty, will rock the park on August 3.

Kennedy’s Kitchen will enchant listeners with its lilting Irish tunes backed by fiddle, flute, whistle, mandolin, tenor banjo, bouzouki, guitar, and bass on August 10.

On August 24, Laurel Taylor and Kaden Slay from La Porte’s new People and Songs ministry will provide a taste of contemporary Christian music. The duo also will be highlighted during the June 8 “Youth Concert.”

In addition to the La Porte City Band led by Chuck Steck, other annual favorites such as Me & the Boys, Cripple Creek (at Stone Lake Beach), PT & the Cruisers, Junior & the Igniters, Midwest Hype, and the Hoosier Stars will return to delight the crowds.

Pre-show music featuring many other talented performers begins at 6:15 p.m. in the park, followed by the concerts at 7. Find out more about the schedule and featured performers at www.artsintheparklaporte.com.

Also mark your calendars to register for the Wednesday, June 14 Park and Canvas event beginning at 6 p.m. with local artist Dori Huber. Participants of this fundraiser will enjoy the City Band while Dori leads them stroke by stroke in creating their own work of art. Even first timers will find pleasure in picking up a paint brush.

Weekly concert attendees are encouraged to come hungry and enjoy the sizzling I-Street Meats hot dogs, as well as chips, popcorn and homemade cookies. Proceeds from the concessions are a critical support of this free annual series.

Organizations or individuals willing to volunteer may register on the web site. Helpers are needed to run Popeye’s Poppin’ in the Park Concessions, along with youth who assist by selling goods on the hillside.

Door Village Harvest Festival Celebrates 25 Years! https://www.michigancitylaporte.com/door-village-harvest-festival-celebrates-25-years/ https://www.michigancitylaporte.com/door-village-harvest-festival-celebrates-25-years/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 22:42:51 +0000 https://michigancitylaporte.com/?p=10178 LaPorte, IN (May 24, 2017)

The Door Village Harvest Festival celebrates its 25th Birthday! The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday September 9 and 10, 2017 at Scipio Township Park on Joliet Road in Door Village in La Porte County, Indiana. Planning for the festival began back in 1990 following the closing of the Scipio Township School in Door Village after 150 years on the same location. Following the demolition of the school’s building, a township park was soon developed.  The festival was then started by a small group of dedicated citizens as a tribute to the historic Door Village community with all profits going to the park.

There will be many exhibits, booths, demonstrations, tours, and activities planned for the event. Some of the popular activities are the Historic Horse and Wagon Tours of Door Village, the Living Cemetery Tour, Civil War Camp, 1832 Settler Camp, Native American Indian Camp, the high quality arts and craft vendors, and the Antique Autos, Trucks, and Tractors display. Special entertainment will include musicians Phil and Dustin Anderson, Folk Grass, Good Timing Barbershop Quartet, Rusty Strings, and Homemade Jamm. Other highlights are the  historic demonstrations and exhibits such as Grandpa’s Woodshed and Barnyard, Grandma’s Parlor, the Blue Spruce Alpacas, children’s games, and face painting by Clowning Attractions.

If you love good food, Saturday morning will have the Pancake, French Toast and eggs breakfast with chicken and noodles and ham and beans for lunch. Sunday is the famous pork chop dinner. There will be a variety of food vendors, too, throughout the weekend.

The Door Village Harvest Festival Committee has worked diligently to provide a weekend that is a tribute to the fascinating history of the Door Village community and its pioneers. We sincerely appreciate all of those individuals and groups who have generously supported the festival for 25 years, and we look forward to the future.

As always the Door Village Harvest Festival has something for everyone!

For more information contact: John Winter, Festival Chairman (219)362-4315 or Bruce Johnson (219)362-3749 or mrjsc@csinet.net. Find us on Facebook!

The quilt display entitled “A Cozy Cover-up: A Look at La Porte County Quilts” will be up for all of June July and August, 2017. They can be found on all levels at the museum. Thanks to Larry Wade for making the quilt racks used in the exhibit.

Featured in the display are Friendship quilts, including one by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church of La Porte from 1878.  A Centennial quilt from 1876 is also on display.

In Exhibit Hall on the lower level, the quilts of prominent quilter, Ruth Johnson are featured. Ruth, who passed away in 2004, was the leader of 2 quilting groups for 25 years each: the group at the Swanson Center and also at Bethany Church.

Also featured is the quilt made of the Boy Scout badges, kerchiefs and patches of Dan Bolinger. It is hanging in the Boy Scout display on the lower level of the museum.

Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Blue Chip Casino will once again be Major Sponsors for Award Winning Race

Visit Michigan City LaPorte and Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram recently announced the title sponsor of the Great Lakes Grand Prix will be known as The Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram’s Award Winning Great Lakes Grand Prix.  And, as in the past 8 years it will be presented by Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa.

“We’re thrilled to be back in town”, said Scott Clausing Michigan City’s General Manager

The acquisition of Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram represents a full circle for the Taylor Automotive Group. In 1991, David Taylor began his automotive career when he became a partner in Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Plymouth dealership located on 11th Street.

While nearly 30 years have passed, we couldn’t be more excited to be back with the brand-new Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram!

Opening a new dealership in Michigan City provided an opportunity for us to plant our flag in another vibrant community.  Like the other areas where we operate, we actively look for opportunities to give back. As such, we’re excited to be the title sponsor for the 9th Annual Award Winning Great Lakes Grand Prix.

We look forward to getting more acquainted with our community and sponsoring the Michigan City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Award Winning Great Lakes Grand Prix.  Make sure to stop by our booth and say hello at the race August 4-6.

Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa has been one of Chicago’s favorite getaway since 1963, providing an unforgettable experience of exciting casino gaming & luxurious relaxation.  They have supported the Great Lakes Grand Prix since day one by providing sleeping rooms for the race teams, an awards banquet following the boat race and monetary support in various other ways.

“The Great Lakes Grand Prix brings millions of dollars annually into our community and this would not happen without the long-time support of these two outstanding community partners” said jack Arnett, Executive Director of the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Midwest Living Magazine along with Indiana State Tourism Association awarded the 2016 race “Best Festival or Event” for the state of Indiana.

“The 2017 Grand Prix in its 9th year along with the Taste of Michigan City has become the signature event for the county” said Arnett.
