Visitors will again get the chance to feel the rumble of 3,000 horsepower engines and see the rooster tail spray of the Lake Michigan surf as a collection of the worlds’ fastest and most colorful powerboats roar past the Michigan City Lighthouse Pier at speeds nearing 175 miles per hour.
Visit Michigan City LaPorte is happy to announce the return of the 11th Annual Award-Winning Great Lakes Grand Prix. This race will be held at Washington Park in Michigan City. LaPorte County’s signature event injects millions of dollars into the local economy and both visitors and locals alike are looking forward to 4 days of fun and excitement.

For the 11th anniversary, organizers are planning on more than 20 participating race boats. A host of activities are being planned and there will be VIP events showcasing race boats and drivers on both Thursday and Friday evenings. The tented catered VIP brunch featuring chef-carved prime rib, on the Washington Park boardwalk, on race day and the Grand Prix Awards event at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa on Sunday evening are a must.
Many of the events and entrance to the race are free! Friday and Saturday evening enjoy live entertainment on the Boardwalk in Washington Park.
On Sunday, during the race, there will be a charity silent auction, the proceeds will be given in honor the Michigan City Emergency Management Volunteers who work so tirelessly during the race event. Auction items range from woman’s jewelry, hotel and restaurant gift certificate to sports memorabilia.
Spending time at the Grand Prix’s event’s will give you an opportunity to meet the racers so that on Sunday you can root for the team you’ve adopted as your favorite.
The “Taste of Michigan City” is scheduled, in conjunction with the race, on Friday and Saturday. The “Taste” will be held in downtown Michigan City on Franklin Street between 7th Street and 4th Streets, with a free shuttle loop running from Washington Park. Saturday also boasts, from 10am-4pm, a vintage car show in Washington Park presented by Four A’s Car Club. The Boat Parade & Block Party will begin Saturday evening, in downtown Michigan City at 6:00pm. Here you get a chance to meet the race teams and get a close-up and personal look at the boats.
