Ice Fishing Tournaments – Feb 9 – 11, 2018
LaPorte’s lakes make this community an ideal spot for two great ice fishing tournaments – one a precursor to a national tourney and another, a popular local favorite. And they’re held the same weekend! The North American Ice Fishing Circuit (NAIFC) Qualifying Tournament welcomes competitors and spectators as teams from across the Ice Belt states try to qualify for the national NAIFC tournament. Held on Stone and Pine lakes, it’s the only NAIFC qualifying competition held in Indiana. On Saturday of that weekend, the Friends of Fishing host the Maple City Ice Fishing Classic for the public from 5 a.m. to noon on Stone Lake. Cash prizes will be offered, and participant names will be entered in a prize drawing.
Shelf Ice Brew Fest – Feb 17, 2018
There are loads of way to keep warm and have a blast in Michigan City’s Uptown Arts District at this great outdoor brewfest, featuring some 40 local and regional breweries. Sample all kinds of craft beers as Midwest brewers set up shop in four big tents. The event includes fire pits where you can warm up while you sip, an ice sculpture competition, some fun snow activities and lots of delicious food provided by local restaurants. The event, held along Franklin Street between 6th and 8th, sells out each year, so it’s a good idea to get your tickets ahead of time. The Michigan City Mainstreet Association sponsors the brewfest, and proceeds go right back into this vibrant area of the community. The association applies the money toward continuing improvements to the Uptown Arts District and holds plenty of fun events there through the year.
Bride Blu Bridal Show – Feb 18, 2018
Plan a perfect wedding at Northwest Indiana’s premier bridal show, held each year at the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa in Michigan City. Some 60 vendors from Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan will be on hand, displaying all the options for gowns, tuxedos, venues, flowers, photography, videos, music, catering, cakes, and makeup. Meet with the experts while you sip champagne and sample hors d’oeuvres, compliments of the Blue Chip. View a fashion show, get a free tote bag, and be entered in drawings for prizes, including the big one – a trip to Las Vegas. Admission is free if you register ahead online. Bring the whole bridal party, friends and family along for this fun day. If you’re coming from out of town, The Blue Chip Hotel is a great place to spend the night.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade – March 10, 2018
Everyone’s at least a little bit Irish when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, and Michigan City is the place to go for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the Uptown Arts District. Parade participants step off from 11th Street, marching north on Franklin and ending on 4th. Floats created by organizations, families and neighborhoods delight the crowds, and plenty of candy gets thrown to the kids. Bagpipe bands march, including the Culver Academy Pipe and Drum Corps. There’ll be lots of activities for kids after the parade. Adults can hop a bus that travels between pubs in the late afternoon and early evening, and several local restaurants will have corned beef and cabbage on their menus that day.
