Summer Excitement 2018

Visit Michigan city LaPorte encourages you to plan a Staycation this season. Avoid long lines, expensive theme parks and long travel times. In LaPorte County we offer unique experiences and destinations, like culture, sporting events and outdoor recreation to name a few. We have exciting destinations all year round, however we have packed the first week in August with a music festival, an outdoor art exhibit and a high-speed boat race on Lake Michigan.

Michigan City Chamber Music Festival is Inspired by the area’s natural environment, history, and the community’s loyalty to the arts. This extraordinary Festival has moved Michigan City since 2002 with the astonishing combination of Grammy Award-winning musicians, lavish receptions, and free admission. The Festival provides enjoyment for the whole family with our annual series of five free concerts and concerts and classes for children by our preeminent Festival musicians. MCCMF concerts, August 4-12, are presented at The First Presbyterian Church located at 121 W 9th St., Michigan City, IN 46360.

Sculpture Dedication and SculptFusion Kick-off – The 2018 SculptFusion Kick-off party will be held at Michigan City’s City Hall on Wednesday, August 1 beginning at 6 pm. The public is invited to join the Michigan City Public Art Committee in a dedication to celebrate the donation of the sculpture, Dasein, by Michigan artist, John Sauve, to the city. In addition, four new sculptures have been leased for the next two years, that will add vitality to the city-scape. Many of the artists will be present to celebrate with the public. There will be light refreshments in City Hall after the dedication. These new sculptures will join the other pieces of sculpture and contribute to the beautification of Michigan City and highlight the vitality of the Uptown Arts District, Washington Park, Charles R. Westcott Park and other high-visibility locations near Lake Michigan. These new pieces, that will be in place by June 17th, will be added to Otocast, a free phone app with a self-guided audio tour of Sculptfusion. Once you download the free Otocast app at the Apple/Google Play Store, scroll down to Michigan City, IN Sculptfusion choose a sculpture and listen to the artist’s own insight about their sculpture. Please include SculptFusion in your visit.

Great Lakes Grand Prix 10th Anniversary – You think the first 9 years were exciting for this signature event in Michigan City, just wait until you see what we have in store for the 10th Anniversary. Visit Michigan City LaPorte is happy to announce the return of the “10th Annual Award-Winning Big Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix presented by Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa”. It’s a mouth full of fun and excitement. VIP events leading up to the Great Lakes Grand Prix are scheduled, so don’t miss out on all the fun and excitement. Grand Prix week is August 2nd through August 5th. And that’s not all; many of the events and entrance to the race are free! The “Taste of Michigan City” is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 3rd from 4-11pm and on Saturday from 11am-11pm. A continuous free shuttle service will run from Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa to Washington Park both Saturday and Sunday. Due to expectations of large crowds, we are urging everyone to take advantage of the free parking and free shuttle. On Saturday evening the boat parade will travel north on Franklin Street from 9th Street to 4th Street beginning at 6 pm. Here you can meet the race teams and get a close-up look at the boats. Lake Michigan Tours is bringing back the tour boats that were prevalent in Michigan city in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They offer an opportunity to take an adventure along the shores of Lake Michigan. Whether you are a seeker of adventure, food, the sun or simply a quiet time with the one you love, tour boats are your key to a holiday you will never forget. The region will captivate your heart, while the tours will thrill the rest of you. The main dock is in
Millennium Plaza along Trail Creek in Michigan City. They will operate seven days a week from mid-June until Labor Day, weather permitting. We hope to see you soon.
