Reel in a Prize Catch – A supreme adventure is in store for everyone in the group as you head out on Lake Michigan’s clear, blue waters to cast for Coho and Chinook salmon. After all, Michigan City is known as the “Coho Capital of the World,” and professional charter boat captains based there provide everything you need, from the boat, bait, and licenses to lures and poles. These experts are devoted anglers themselves, so are skilled at helping people of all ages and abilities on half- and full-day outings.

Kitesurf the Waves – If your group is looking for some extreme new thrills, kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, will put you on and above the waves on a surfboard powered by wind and a kite. Attached to a large steerable kite by a harness, kitesurfers zoom across and above the water. Stoke Riders at Washington Beach in Michigan City can provide you with equipment and lessons.

Kayak the Great Lake – Paddlers feel as if they are one with the water when they glide the Lake Michigan National Water Trail. This designated route, favored by experienced kayakers, covers the entire Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan. It can be accessed from 12 spots between Michigan City and the community of Whiting to the west. The trail provides an incredible view of beaches, dunes, and bluffs. Kayaks can be rented from Harbor Country Adventures in Michigan City.

Dive from the Sky – If you and your buddies really want bragging rights back at home, imagine showing everyone a video or photo of your freefall from 14,000 feet. Skydive Windy City, based in Michigan City, makes it all happen with skydiving jaunts that take off from the Michigan City Airport. No previous experience is necessary for tandem skydiving, where you are fitted with a harness, provided goggles, and tethered to your professional instructor for the dive. After takeoff, you head skyward and freefall before the parachute deploys and you float toward earth, taking in far-reaching views of shoreline and sky. Must be 18 years old.

Conquer the Dunes – A stunning landscape of sandy peaks rising from beaches along Lake Michigan draw outdoor lovers ready for some hiking to Indiana Dunes National Park and State Park, just west of Michigan City. Some 50 miles of trails weave through and over rugged dunes and head farther inland across watery bogs and through deep forests. You can test yourself and your group by taking on the 3 Dune Challenge, climbing the three tallest sand dunes at Indiana Dunes State Park. The 1.5-mile trail includes 552 vertical feet to climb. The reward: breathtaking views and the title of “dune conqueror.”

Mild Outdoors

Golf courses, bicycle trails, and quiet lakes invite indulging in your favorite outdoor activity, complete with sunny skies and mild breezes.

Hit the Links – Three golf courses in the community of LaPorte and a 36-hole layout in Michigan City give plenty of options for hours on the fairways. LaPorte’s three 18-hole courses each offer unique challenges. Beechwood Municipal Golf Course features a traditional layout and design, Briar Leaf Golf Club is home to the area’s only island green, and Legacy Hills Golf Club provides two totally different experiences on the front and back nine. In addition, both Briar Leaf and Legacy Hills offer exceptional restaurants. The Michigan City Municipal Golf Course, known as one of the region’s top public courses, is geared to all skill levels and boasts a beautiful setting.

Bike the Trails – If members of your group are bicycle fanatics, make sure they bring their bikes along. The quiet back roads and serene small towns in LaPorte County invite treks where you can immerse yourself for an hour or a day. Twenty bicycling routes have been established with loops totaling 420 miles. Bicycles also have access to nearly all trails in LaPorte County Parks, which feature both paved and unpaved pathways. Both Bluhm County Park in Westville and Red Mill County Park near LaPorte also feature mountain bike trails.

Enjoy Quiet Lakes – Whether your group is looking for an afternoon of pontoon pleasures, inland lake fishing, or other watery endeavors, LaPorte’s Stone and Pine lakes offer a host of options and excellent public beaches. Groups often rent pontoons from marinas at Pine Lake, loading up fishing gear and coolers to spend a day on the water casting for bass, crappie and more and enjoying cooling swims. The marinas also rent jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks and other watercraft.
